For horned puffins who live in colonies that number in the tens of thousands social etiquette is very important. One of the most prominent social behaviors between puffin pairs is called “billing”. Participating puffins invite billing by making a low approach, heads gently swinging from side to side till the lower part of their beaks touch. In crowded colonies billing can draw on-lookers that may try to get into the act.
