Slowly, over thousands of years polar bears have given up their dependence on the land and consequently their omnivorous diet. They spend most of their time roaming widely on ice floes or when on shore stay very close to the water’s edge in search of their next meal of fresh seal. This polar bear mom and first year cub appear to be searching for sign of cracks or holes in the ice. Either will signal the possibility of finding their favorite food. Unfortunately for humans in the arctic, polar bears have a very liberal definition of what constitutes a seal. Extreme caution in polar bear country is a wise choice.
