  • Beginning in the mid-19th century, hundreds of sternwheelers transported millions of tons of freight and thousands of adventure-hungry passengers from one gold rush city to another in interior Alaska. Sternwheelers were ideal for the shallow rivers of Alaska, possessing the ability to challenge wildly fluctuating water levels, rocks, sandbars, snags and shipboard fires. By the 1950’s the era of the sternwheeler was all but gone. Today the Discovery III carries up to 1,000 visitors at a time on tours along the Chena and Tanana Rivers in Fairbanks.
