  • As a predator that routinely hunts from an altitude of several hundred feet eagles have extraordinary vision. First, eagles have two focus spots in each eye, which enables them to see forward and sideways at the same time. Second, researchers believe that eagle vision is eight times more acute than ours. That’s the equivalent of viewing the world through a set of 8x binoculars. It may be anthropomorphic to say but its hard not to wonder (in a very human way) what was on this eagle’s mind.

  • Slowly, over thousands of years polar bears have given up their dependence on the land and consequently their omnivorous diet. They spend most of their time roaming widely on ice floes or when on shore stay very close to the water’s edge in search of their next meal of fresh seal. This polar bear mom and first year cub appear to be searching for sign of cracks or holes in the ice. Either will signal the possibility of finding their favorite food. Unfortunately for humans in the arctic, polar bears have a very liberal definition of what constitutes a seal. Extreme caution in polar bear country is a wise choice.

  • A visit to Round Island in the Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary in Bristol Bay, is one of the great wildlife experiences in Alaska. Red fox are the island's largest predator and have lived there unhunted for a very long time, making them amazingly comfortable around humans. This vixen (female) took a long nap a few feet away from the photographer. After nearly an hour, the fox woke, registered its boredom with a yawn and a stretch, and trotted off.

  • A sea otter spends a lot of time cleaning its fur. Without body fat pristine fur is the only thing that keeps an otter alive in very cold water. Long waterproof guard hairs keep the dense under fur layer dry limiting heat loss.
